Why We Started Honest Coins LI: Keeping the Tradition Alive

Nobody starts a challenge coin company to get rich. If you've spent any time in law enforcement, fire, EMS, or the military, you already know that. The people in those jobs understand something about the gap between what the work costs and what it pays. You do it anyway. That's the whole point.

We started Honest Coins LI in 2015 because we were first responders and veterans who kept running into the same problem: the companies making challenge coins for our community didn't really know our community. They knew how to take an order. They didn't know what a coin meant to the person carrying it — or to the family sitting at the table when that person came home.

Who We Are

Honest Coins LI is a woman-owned, family-run business based on Long Island, New York. Our team is made up entirely of active and former first responders, law enforcement officers, and veterans. We didn't build this company as outsiders looking in at a niche market. We built it because we live in this world — on both sides of it. We've been the ones ordering coins and the ones receiving them.

The Frustration That Started Everything

Before Honest Coins LI existed, ordering a custom challenge coin meant dealing with large manufacturers who treated your department like just another transaction. Designs came back generic. Proofs took weeks. Revisions cost extra. The coins that arrived looked fine in a catalog photo but didn't feel right in person. And the pricing was a maze — base price, then size upcharge, then color upcharge, then shipping, then die fee.

We knew we could do better. Not because we had more equipment or more capital — but because we actually cared about what we were making and for whom.

We Do This for the Community — Not the Margins

The first responder community knows what it means to live paycheck to paycheck while doing some of the most demanding, dangerous, and emotionally heavy work that exists. We know that because we live it. We started Honest Coins LI with a commitment that has never wavered: we donate a significant portion of our profits back to the first responder community.

That means coins as donations to fallen officer memorial funds. It means contributing to organizations that support injured firefighters and their families. It means that when you order from us, you're not just getting a coin — you're supporting the people this whole tradition was built to honor.

What "Keeping the Tradition Alive" Actually Means

Our motto is "Keep the Tradition Alive." We chose those words carefully. The challenge coin tradition isn't just about the coins themselves — it's about the culture of recognition, belonging, and mutual respect that they represent. A coin given at a promotion ceremony. A coin left at a memorial. A coin passed across a table between two veterans who served in the same theater twenty years apart.

Those moments matter. We want to be worthy of them.

Why We Price the Way We Do

Our all-inclusive pricing — 50 coins at $10 each, 100 coins at $7 each, everything included — wasn't a marketing decision. It was an ethical one. We've seen what happens when departments get a low quote and then watch it climb with every add-on. We've seen small volunteer fire companies and underfunded EMS agencies walk away from ordering because the final number was too far from the original. That's not right.

Any size from 1.75" to 2.25". Any thickness from 1mm to 4mm. 3D on both sides. Any plating. Unlimited colors. Free artwork, free revisions, free US shipping. One price. That's what we'd want, so that's what we offer.

Our Promise to You

We will treat your order like it matters — because we know it does. Whether you're ordering 50 coins for a small volunteer squad or 500 for a large department ceremony, you'll hear from people who understand why this coin is important. We don't outsource our care. We built this company to be the place we always wished existed when we were on the other side of the order form.
