Challenge Coin Sizes Explained: How to Choose the Right Size for Your Unit

Size is one of the first questions people ask when ordering a custom challenge coin — and it's one of the most underrated decisions in the whole process. Get the size right and the coin feels authoritative in the hand. Get it wrong and even a beautiful design can feel like it's missing something.

We've been making coins since 2015, and we've fielded this question from police departments, fire companies, military units, and EMS agencies across the country. Here's everything you need to know about challenge coin sizes — and how to choose the right one for your order.

Standard Challenge Coin Size Range

Most challenge coins fall in the range of 1.5" to 2.5" in diameter. The sweet spot for professional-grade coins — the kind carried by law enforcement, fire, military, and EMS — is generally 1.75" to 2.25". That's the range we work in at Honest Coins LI, and it covers the vast majority of what departments actually want.

1.75 Inch Coins

The 1.75" coin is the most traditional challenge coin size. It fits comfortably in a closed fist and sits well in a front pocket without bulk. It's the size most people picture when they think of a military or law enforcement challenge coin — the classic. Designs on a 1.75" coin need to be clean and bold, since there's less surface area for detail. Great for unit coins, morale coins, and anything meant to be carried daily.

2.0 Inch Coins

Two inches gives you noticeably more design real estate without crossing into territory where the coin starts feeling like a medallion. It's a sweet spot for designs with more detail — department seals, intricate crests, dual imagery on both sides. The 2" coin has a satisfying presence when you pick it up. It's our single most popular size.

2.25 Inch Coins

The 2.25" coin is larger, with a commanding presence. It's the right choice for retirement coins meant to be displayed, commemorative anniversary coins, or any order where you want the coin to make a statement when you hand it to someone. It's also ideal when your design includes a lot of text or a complex seal that needs room to breathe. The extra quarter inch makes a real difference in how the detail reads.

Coin Thickness: The Often-Ignored Dimension

Diameter gets all the attention, but thickness changes how a coin feels in your hand just as much. A 1mm coin is thin — closer to a poker chip or souvenir coin. A 4mm coin has a substantial, almost jewelry-like weight. For most first responder and military challenge coins, 3mm to 4mm is where you want to be. It gives the coin a heft that signals quality before anyone even looks at the design.

At Honest Coins LI, you can order any thickness from 1mm to 4mm at no extra charge. The thickness is part of your all-inclusive order — choose what feels right for your purpose.

How to Match Size to Purpose

  • Daily carry unit coin: 1.75" at 3–4mm thick

  • Detailed departmental seal or crest: 2.0" or 2.25"

  • Retirement or ceremony coin: 2.25" at 4mm thick for maximum presence

  • Memorial coin: 2.0" or 2.25" — give the name and imagery room

  • Event or fundraiser coin: 1.75" or 2.0" at standard thickness

What Does It Cost?

Here's something we're proud of: at Honest Coins LI, size and thickness don't affect your price. Whether you order 1.75" coins or 2.25" coins, whether you want 1mm or 4mm thick, the price is the same. Fifty coins at $10 each, 100 coins at $7 each. All-inclusive — any size, any thickness, 3D both sides, any plating, unlimited colors, free artwork, free revisions, free US shipping.

Most companies charge more for larger sizes. We don't. Choose the size that serves your coin best — not the one that fits a budget constraint we created artificially.
